Girls Varsity Softball · 8A Regional: George Jenkins Softball Walks Off in Win Over Wellington

Jenkins will now play host to Oviedo Hagerty (22-5) in the regional finals on Friday at 7 p.m.

LAKELAND — Olivia Davis used her speed on Tuesday night, scoring on an infield hit by Janessa Plummer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead George Jenkins to a 2-1 win over Wellington in the Class 8A, Region 3 semifinals.

Davis, who had three hits in four plate appearances, singled just inside the leftfield line with two out and the ball went off the tip of Lexi Butler’s glove. That error allowed Davis to make it to second and set up the winning after the game was tied 1-1 in the fifth inning.

Plummer, who had three infield hit, slammed a shot to second and beat the throw.

It appeared the Wolverines wanted to argue the call. Davis saw that and rounded third to head for home, sliding in as the relay hit in front of the plate.

“She never stopped; she just runs and runs,” said an excited Jenkins coach Jeff Lang. “It was our speed and short game that won this one.”

With Wellington (27-3) scoring first in the third frame on a single by Katie Schmidt and double from Alexis Mobilia, the Eagles (23-5) came back in the bottom of the fifth. Sure enough, there was Davis, who doubled to deep left center and scored from third on squeeze bunt from Paityn Moore.
