George Jenkins senior Alexandria “Ally” Dodds signed a powerlifting scholarship with Midland University on Friday. Midland, in Freemont, Neb., competes in the NAIA division and offers 31 collegiate sports for men and women.

“I have been offered $14,000 per year for powerlifting,” said Dodds, who plans to study nursing. “I am very excited about it because it is very rare for a girl to get a scholarship in powerlifting.”

Dodds, who has been training in powerliftung since she was 8, was a Ledger All-County honorable mention in the 2015-16 season, the first season girls weightlifting was introduced to Polk County schools.

“In powerlifting, you do bench, deadlifting and squat. My squat and deadlift are right about 230 now and bench around 160. It is different than the school competition so I am having to do it outside of school,” said Dodds, who competes with Team Elite out of All-American Gym in Lakeland.

On the prep competition, Dodds competes in the 154-pound division and is fourth among county lifters in the division, posting 265-pound totals. Last year, she finished fifth at the county tournament with a 235-pound total lift (130 bench, 105 clean-and-jerk), fourth at district with a 240 total and 10th in the regional with a 240.
